about

the maker

blacksmith holding rough forged knife with tongs

From a young age my I was interested in designing things and my father taught me the skills to bring these to life. When I was 16 I built a guitar on a bet with a classmate. I began studying cabinet making at our local trades school before switching studies to become a shops teacher. After dropping out, I began studying to become an architect. With my undergraduate I worked at a small firm for two years where I developed a repetitive motion injury from computer use. With the hopes of recovering I became a house husband. I began taking on the majority of the cooking for me and my love Emily. Having just moved in together before my injury, we were using her knives and they were so dull. She reluctantly allowed me sharpen one for us and was so impressed that she supported me while starting my own business sharpening at the Wolseley Farmers Market. There I honed my skills in sharpening, discovered Japanese knives, and began iterating on machine modifications that would help me provide repeatably accurate and sharp results. Now I seek a new challenge.

I want to make things that get passed on, build memories, and are used in the daily lives of others. I want the things I make to beautiful without compromising on function. I want to make things that inspire creativity. I want to defy the conventions of modern blade smithing and introduce both a balance of western and eastern designs. I want to make specific tools for making some of my most beloved food. I want to constantly draw and iterate on design always seeking to improve. I want to work with some of the highest performing steels. I intend for all of the wood I source to be recycled or to be local. With Cooking Implements I intend to not only make knives but also make:

Super thick carbon steel pans for searing

Pizza Peels

Waffle Irons

Strops
